EMMA-JEAN THACKRAY ANNOUNCES NEW ALBUM “WEIRDO” + SHARES NEW SINGLE “WANNA DIE”
Producer, composer, and multi-instrumentalist Emma-Jean Thackray has revealed her second album, Weirdo, set for release on April 25th via Brownswood Recordings and Parlophone. The album is a deeply personal exploration of selfhood, grief, and gratitude, blending grunge, pop, soul, p-funk, and jazz into a celebration of survival and individuality.
Weirdo was entirely written, performed, and produced by Thackray in her South London flat, showcasing her unique musicality. The lead single, “Wanna Die,” contrasts frenetic energy with reflections on mortality and resilience. Thackray’s lyrics move between despair and determination, set against a raw, cathartic percussive backdrop.
Reflecting on the song, Thackray explains, “The lyrics are diary-esque, like confessional poetry. The emotion is balanced with jazz harmony, synths, and pop-punk silliness, making it easier to talk about pain.”
Originally conceived as a meditation on mental health, Weirdo took on new depth following the loss of Thackray’s long-term partner in January 2023. Featuring collaborations with Reggie Watts and Kassa Overall, the album blurs genre boundaries and captures Thackray’s unflinching authenticity. Comparisons to artists like Meshell Ndegeocello, Kate Bush, and Nirvana emerge, making Weirdo a bold, genre-defying leap for the artist.
